When updating your Mac to High Sierra, there are a few things to keep in mind to ensure a smooth transition. First, make sure to hold down the Option key when opening programs and select the location of the original library. If you haven't already started saving new data to the drive with High Sierra, you can delete the old files from your new boot drive.

Your personal libraries, such as Movies, iTunes, and Photos, will likely take up the most space. Once you've deleted the old files, you'll need to manually go through and delete any remaining duplicates. I made this mistake myself, and ended up filling up my spare drive quickly.

When installing High Sierra on a SSD (solid-state drive), it will automatically be converted to APFS, Apple's new file system designed for speed. This means that once the installation is complete, you'll be able to access your files in the RAID set again.

It's also important to resist the temptation to transfer large amounts of data during the installation process. Unless you have enough room on your drive, it's better to wait until later to transfer your entire system. You can use an external drive as a boot drive, but make sure it's a fast one.

The installer requires 5GB of space, so plan accordingly and consider using additional storage installed on your iMac if possible. With a little planning and caution, updating your Mac to High Sierra will be a breeze.
